Alberta Public Health Act

 Public Swimming Pool Regulation

In Alberta, public swimming pools are governed by a combination of provincial legislation and technical standards. The Public Swimming Pools Regulation (under the Public Health Act) provides the legal framework, while the Alberta Pool Standards provide the specific technical requirements for daily operations.

1. Public Swimming Pools Regulation (AR 204/2014)

This is the provincial law that applies to all "public" pools—including municipal centers, hotels, condos, apartments, and campgrounds. It does not apply to private residential pools.

2. Alberta Health - Pool Standards (Amended 2018)

These standards serve as the "rulebook" for meeting the requirements set out in the Regulation.

Note: While the Lifesaving Society (LSS) standards mentioned previously are national "best practices," in Alberta, the Public Health Act and 2014 Pool Standards are the legally enforceable requirements that AHS inspectors use during facility audits.
